What You Will Do:

Under general supervision, collaborates with members of the healthcare team, attends rounds and independently provides optimal nutrition care to patients at high nutrition risk (e.g.: receiving enteral or parenteral nutrition), based on own knowledge and clinical skills. Provides education, training, and expertise as a professional resource to members of the healthcare team, dietetic interns, and dietetic technicians to advance their development in the field.


Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.


1. Uses own knowledge and skills to identify and re-evaluate nutrition risk throughout patients stay; independently performs a nutrition assessment, specific to age and medical status, and, in collaboration with team. Develops an interdisciplinary nutrition plan of care for patients at high risk, within a specialty population. Evaluates effectiveness of nutrition interventions; modifies plan of care according to own professional knowledge.


2. Discusses plan of nutrition care (e.g. nutrition support, diabetes education, etc.) with patient/and or family; provides medical nutrition therapy as indicated; electronically documents nutrition plan of care and education provided.


3. Provides guidance and training to dietetic technicians in conducting nutrition risk assignments and in providing nutrition care to low and moderate risk patients. Coordinates performance management for technicians with Clinical Director.


4. Serves as a preceptor for Dietetic Internship. Reviews application packets and participates in the selection process.


5. Actively contributes to teamwork (cooperates with peers, flexible w/cross coverage) and achievement of department goals; attends staff meetings. Maintains regulatory requirements for The Joint Commission readiness; participates in tracer activities.


6. Active participant in departmental based process improvement activities. Collects department and team data and assists with tracking; identifies areas impacting departmental operations and assists in developing and implementing action plans; actively endorses evidence based practice; participates in unit and/or department based research.


7. Serves as a clinical nutrition resource and provides education and training for the healthcare team (e.g.: physicians, nurses, and other professional staff).


8. Attends and/or participates in various in-service, continuing education credits, and external training workshops, conferences and other relevant educational programs to maintain state licensure. Utilizes and integrates evidence into practice.


What You Need to Be Successful:

Education and Experience

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Food and Nutrition, Dietetics or related field is required.


2. Registration by the American Dietetic Association (Commission on Dietetics Registration) is required.


3. Current licensure in the state of Maryland as a Dietitian/Nutritionist is required.


4. Two years clinical experience is required as a Registered Dietitian at a hospital facility.


5. Prior completion of a Specialty Fellowship Program or Active Specialty Certification: ACE, CNSD, CDE, CSR, CSP, CSO, IBCLC is required. Maintenance of 30 CEUs/2 years is required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology as they relate to nutrition is required to make clinical decisions regarding a patient’s nutritional care plan.


2. Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal skills are necessary to communicate effectively with patients and in making recommendations to physicians and other allied health professionals related to the patient’s plan of nutrition care.


3. Ability to establishes and maintain courteous and effective relationships that foster quality customer service, demonstrates sensitivity and awareness of customer needs when dealing with patients/visitors, co-workers and healthcare staff.


4. Demonstrated ability to learn and use an online computer system to enter and manage patient information.


5. Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, work independently but also as part of a team. Must also plan and organize schedules and have effective time management skills.


6. Demonstrated ability to understand and apply the procedures, practices, policies and fundamental concepts in the assigned unit/division; and maintain patient confidentiality.


7. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide nutrition care appropriate to the age of the patients served for given service. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his/her age specific needs, and to provide the care as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures.
